Illinois Tax Rebates for 2022

A provision in this year’s Illinois Family Relief Plan allows for one-time rebates for Illinois residents, for both individual income taxes and property taxes. Here’s what you need to know.

Rebate Amounts
For individual income tax rebates, the amount of the rebate is:

  • $50 if filing as a single person
  • $100 if filing jointly
  • $100 additional per claimed dependent, up to a maximum $300 additional

You’re only qualified for the individual tax rebate if your adjusted gross income on your 2021 tax return was less than $200,000 (if filing single) or $400,000 (if filing jointly).

For the property tax rebate, the amount is equal to your property tax credit from 2021, up to a maximum of $300. This rebate is also limited by your 2021 reported adjusted gross income – less than $250,000 (if filing single) or $500,000 (if filing jointly).

To qualify for these rebates, you must have been an Illinois resident in 2021.

Claiming the Rebates
If you’ve already filed your Illinois taxes, you should receive the rebates automatically if you qualify, with no further action required on your part.

For the individual rebate, this means having already filed both Form IL-1040 and Schedule E/EIC (only required if claiming the additional dependent rebate). If you have not yet filed your 2021 return, you can still claim the rebate by filing on or before October 17, 2022.

For the property tax rebate, this means having already filed both Form IL-1040 and Schedule ICR. If you’ve already filed but did not include Schedule ICR, you can complete and submit the special Form IL-1040-PTR (Property Tax Rebate), which is available on the mytax.illinois.gov website. If you haven’t yet filed your 2021 return, you’ll also have until October 17, 2022 to claim the rebate.

The rebates will be sent to you using the same method as your Illinois tax refund. If you did not receive a refund, or if you submit Form IL-1040-PTR separately, a paper check will be sent to your most recent address on file.

In all cases, rebates are expected to begin being issued by September 12, 2022, in a process that will take several months to complete. You can check the status of your rebate on the MyTax Illinois website, using the “Where’s My Rebate?” form.

Other Important Details
The rebates are not subject to Illinois income tax, and are exempt from offset for state and local obligations. However, if you have questions about how they may affect your federal tax obligations when preparing your 2022 federal income tax return, you should contact your tax advisor.
