Overseas Outsourcing: A Weiss Success Story
As you may already know, the accounting profession has a talent shortage. With CPAs already in short supply and fewer U.S. college students pursuing accounting, more and more accounting firms are turning to offshore outsourcing to handle a wide range of tax-related work.
Weiss & Company LLP has been particularly successful in integrating outsourced services into company operations. For the past two years, we’ve been working with a small team in India comprised of 3-4 professionals who work exclusively on Weiss projects. “We think of them as a second team that works when we’re asleep,” said Steve Goluch, a CPA and partner in the tax department.
The relationship began in 2022 when senior accountant Jay Patel took a trip to Gujarat, India, to get his impressions and evaluate whether outsourcing would be a viable solution for Weiss. He was impressed with what he found. The firm he visited featured office facilities as good as any in the U.S., with highly competent professionals working on high speed, closed internet connections and tight security measures in place.
With Jay’s approval, Weiss decided to push ahead and set about hiring. A small group in Glenview reviewed résumés carefully, scheduled numerous phone interviews, and ultimately selected the team of contractors now in place. “We couldn’t be happier with the results to date,” Goluch said.
The feeling is mutual, as members of our Gujarat-based team report a high level of satisfaction with their work, compensation, and the opportunity to gain valuable experience. “I think they truly relish the feeling of being part of the Weiss team,” Goluch pointed out. To illustrate, he shared a special story about one of the contractors, a young woman who became engaged and felt comfortable enough to share her anticipation and excitement with her co-workers on both sides of the ocean. Then one day, she asked to speak to Steve privately. She explained it was their custom for the engaged woman to ask her boss for a special marriage blessing. Would Steve feel comfortable providing one to her?
It was a special moment of celebration and sharing life rituals that occur all over the world. Steve said they discussed it and then he offered her a very special blessing for a long and happy marriage. He was very touched, and it somehow made the thousands of miles between Gurjarat and Illinois seem that much closer.
