Rebecca Schaps Celebrates 25 years at Weiss

Since joining Weiss & Company LLP in late 1999, Rebecca Schaps has worked in many different areas of the firm, culminating in her current role of Office Manager. What has kept her relevant and essential is her natural adaptability, receptivity to change, and her knack for figuring things out on her own.

Like many Weiss team members, Rebecca’s responsibilities have changed over the years. She supports the partners, working with specific individuals tasked with responsibilities like employee retention or the 401K. She helps Kari Thompson, Weiss’s Talent Acquisitions Manager, with onboarding new employees and manages the process for the firm’s annual renewals for all the equipment and insurance programs. When employees have questions about their insurance options or using sick days, she’s the person to call.

Rebecca also manages the firm’s time and billing system – what she jokingly referred to as “her baby” – and trains new hires and staff time entry, reporting, billing and other features of the system. And even though she is not an accountant, she is responsible for making sure thousands of returns filed electronically are submitted properly and on time. Except for paper-filed returns, she keeps track of every single electronic return as it makes its way through the system. Keeping the system up to date is imperative.

As returns are released to clients, Rebecca waits for confirmation of client consent forms to be returned. As the deadline approaches, she follows up with respective Weiss managers, principals, and partners to determine if an extension has been filed, are there questions to be answered, did the approval come in through another channel or is the party no longer a client? She needs an answer for every single client before midnight on April 15.

Rebecca loves working at Weiss and couldn’t imagine being anyplace else. She admires her colleagues, respects the firm’s leadership, and appreciates the supportive work culture. More than anything, she thrives on being busy and knowing that people depend on her.

That said, COVID taught her a lot about maintaining a healthy work-life balance. These days she loves to be outside doing some sort of exercise like walking or riding on her sporty new electric bike. She’s an avid reader and an active ‘plant mom’ taking care of 50-60 houseplants.

She’s also a single mom to her college-aged daughter who she calls her “mini me.” Her partner introduced her to activities like kayaking and camping that she loves, even though she didn’t think she would. But true to form, Rebecca is remarkably consistent. She is adaptable, receptive to change, and enjoys figuring things out on her own. Those traits have served her well both at Weiss and at home.
