Reduced IRS Staffing May Impact Customer Service and Response Times

The 2024 tax filing season just wrapped up last month in what turned out to be a relatively normal season for us. However, shortly after April 15, the Internal Revenue Service started mailing Reduction in Force (RIF) notices to employees. It plans to reduce its workforce by up to 40%, going from a high of 102,000 employees to a reduced workforce of 60,000 to 70,000 employees. The reductions will take place in two phases; the second phase is scheduled to begin in August.

Certain offices within the IRS will be severely impacted with “high” levels of staff reduction including Civil Rights, Online Service, Taxpayer Experience, and Transformation Strategy Office in Phase 1 and Taxpayer Services and Compliance in Phase 2.

Weiss & Company LLP is aware of these impending cuts. According to Jim Hamilton, a Partner in Tax at Weiss, “The firm expects to see some delays and increased response time by the IRS to inquiries about Notices, reviews of amended returns, and general inquiries and questions. Depending on the situation, it’s possible that some of our clients may be affected. We’re doing everything we can do to minimize the disruption. Our team is available and ready to assist clients with any tax-related questions or issues.”

One way to potentially improve response time is by registering with the IRS. Please note that creating a profile and completing the registration process typically takes about 30 minutes.

If you have concerns are currently experiencing issues, please call or email your Weiss Tax Professional directly or call our office at 847.441.8800.
