Tax Season 2023: Key Dates and Events

The Internal Revenue Service recently announced that it will begin accepting tax returns on Monday, January 23rd, 2023, officially launching Tax Season 2023. As a service to our clients as well as the general public, the team at Weiss and Company LLP put together the following month-by-month guide to 2023’s key tax dates and events.

January 2023

  • 1/16/23 – Q4 2022 estimated tax payments due for both individual filers (self-employed individuals and independent contractors) and businesses.
  • 1/23/23 – 2022 Tax Season begins for both individual filers and businesses.
  • 1/31/23 – Due date for employers and businesses to process and send out W-2 forms.
  • 1/31/23 – Due date for employers, businesses to process and send out 1099 forms (specifically 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, and 1099-K) to any independent contractor utilized in 2022.

February 2023

  • 2/15/23 – Due date for individual filers to file Form W-4 to reclaim exemptions from withholding.

March 2023

  • 3/15/23 – Taxes due for businesses categorized as Partnerships, Multi-Member LLCs, and S-Corporations. Form 1065 or 1120S must be filed by 3/15/23.
  • 3/15/23 – Deadline to file a business return extension using Form 7004.

April 2023

  • 4/3/23 – Required minimum distribution (RMD) due for individual filers who turned 72 years old in 2022 from retirement account.
  • 4/18/23 – Tax Day 2023.
  • 4/18/23 – Deadline for individual filers to file for an extension (Form 4868).
  • 4/18/23 – Deadline for individual filers to make IRA and HSA contributions for 2022 tax year.
  • 4/18/23 – Q1 2023 estimated tax payments due for both individual filers (self-employed individuals and independent contractors) and businesses.
  • 4/18/23 – Taxes due for businesses categorized as C-Corporations.
  • 4/18/23 – Deadline to file a trust (Form 1041) or gift tax return (Form 709).

May 2023

  • 5/15/23 – Deadline to file a calendar year nonprofit or private foundation return.
  • 5/15/23 – Fiscal year S-Corporation tax payments due.

June 2023

  • 6/15/23 – Q2 2023 estimated tax payments due for both individual filers (self-employed individuals and independent contractors) and businesses.

July 2023

  • 7/31/23 – Deadline to file an employment benefit information return (Form 5500) or extension.

September 2023

  • 9/15/23 – Q3 2023 estimated tax payments due for both individual filers (self-employed individuals and independent contractors) and businesses.
  • 9/15/23 – Deadline for returns for businesses categorized as Extended Partnerships and S-corporations.

October 2023

  • 10/2/23 – Deadline to file an extended trust return (Form 1041).
  • 10/16/23 – Deadline to file extended 2022 tax returns for individual filers.
  • 10/16/23 – Deadline for returns for businesses categorized as C-Corporations.

December 2023

  • 12/31/23 – Required minimum distributions (RMDs) must be taken for individual filers aged 73 years or older by the end of 2023.

January 2024

  • 1/15/24 – Q4 2023 estimated tax payments due for both individual filers (self-employed individuals and independent contractors) and businesses.
