Weiss Opens 2023 with Major Staffing Moves
As Weiss & Company LLP kicked off the new year and their 55th tax season, the longtime Glenview-based CPA firm announced a number of significant staffing moves.
“We take talent and culture very seriously at Weiss,” managing partner Dan Fortman said in making the announcement, “and I think these moves reflect the strength of our commitment to both.”
The announcement included a pair of new hires.
Nina Kilyan has been brought on as a staff accountant in the firm’s accounting and advisory services department. In her role, Nina specializes in business accounting and controllership services; individual tax preparation; payroll and sales tax preparation; and QuickBooks consulting. She has a BS in accounting from Northeastern Illinois University.
Michael Ibanez has been hired as a staff accountant in the firm’s assurance services department. In his role, Michael specializes in audit and review services for closely held businesses and not-for-profit entities; audit services for employee benefit plans; and corporate, partnership, and individual tax preparation. He has a BBA in accounting from Florida Atlantic University.
Sam Ortiz has joined the firm’s tax department as a staff accountant. In his role, Sam specializes in corporate, partnership, and individual tax preparation; compilations of financial statements for closely held businesses; controllership services to clients seeking to outsource functions of their accounting department; accounting software installation and support; and QuickBooks consulting. He has a BS in finance from Northeastern Illinois University, as well as a Master of Science in accounting from DePaul University.
In addition, the following promotions were announced:
Katherine Chung, CPA has been promoted to partner. Previously a senior manager in the firm’s tax department, Katherine specializes in corporate, partnership, and individual tax planning; international income tax matters; IRS, state, and local audit representation; tax due diligence and planning for M&As; and state tax nexus and planning. She has a BS in accounting from the University of Illinois at Chicago, as well as a Master of Science in Taxation from Northern Illinois University.
Jeremy Morgan, CPA has been promoted to partner. Previously a senior manager in the firm’s assurance services department, Jeremy specializes in a variety of audit services including audit and review of financial statements for closely held businesses and not for profit entities; corporate, partnership, and individual tax planning; business consulting including for ASC 606 (Revenue from Contracts with Customers) and ASC 842 (Leases); controllership services; consulting related to internal control procedures and risk assessment; financial planning, business consulting, and bookkeeping services; and litigation support and forensic accounting services. He has a BS in accounting from Northern Illinois University.
Dan Bailey has been promoted to senior manager in the firm’s audit & assurance services department. Previously a manager, he specializes in audit and review services for closely held businesses and not for profit entities; audit services for employee benefit plans; corporate, partnership, and individual tax preparation; and business consulting. He has a BA in accounting from Augustana College, as well as a Master of Science in accounting from Northern Illinois University.
Andrew McCue has been promoted to manager in the firm’s audit & assurance services department. In his prior role as a supervisor, Andrew specialized in audit and review services for closely held businesses and tax-exempt organizations; audit services for employee benefit plans; and corporate, partnership, and individual tax preparation. He has a BS in accounting from Northern Illinois University.
Valerie Medick has been promoted to supervisor in the firm’s audit & assurance services department. Previously a senior accountant, Valerie specializes in audit and review services for closely held businesses and not for profit entities; audit services for employee benefit plans; and corporate, partnership, and individual tax preparation. She has a BS in accounting from Northern Illinois University.
Matthew Doetsch has been promoted to senior tax accountant in the firm’s tax department. In his prior role as a staff accountant, Matthew specialized in corporate, partnership, trust and individual tax preparation; tax and consulting for not for profit entities; compilations of financial statements for closely held businesses; QuickBooks consulting and accounting software installation and support; controllership services; payroll and sales tax preparation; business consulting; business accounting services; and family office services for high net worth multi-generational families. He has both a BS and a Master of Science in Accounting from Northern Illinois University.
Shaz Shah has been promoted to senior tax accountant in the firm’s tax department. Previously a staff accountant, Shaz specializes in corporate, partnership, trust, and individual tax preparation; compilations of financial statements for closely held businesses; and business consulting; and business accounting services. He has a BS in management from Northeastern Illinois University.
